Panic Attacks Driving
One of the more common questions I am asked is how to cope with anxiety while driving. Ranging from fear of being caught in traffic to crossing waterway bridges, people have many different fears in this area. Often the anxiety stems from a fear of being trapped in the vehicle in gridlock traffic or losing control of the vehicle and causing a collision. Needless to say, even though they may have been battling with a driving phobia for many years, almost all of the people I have consulted with have not had their fears of a mishap occur. Let’s look at the primary fear, that of having an accident due to the distractions of possbile panic attacks while driving. Panic Attacks DrivingMost...

What Causes Panic Attacks
Panic attacks can happen to ordinary people for no reason at all. In fact, they can even occur when a sufferer least expects the symptoms to appear, such as when they are sleeping or even just relaxing at home watching the television or doing simple household chores. Sufferers of panic attacks often describe their attacks as a sudden onset where the heart begins to beat rapidly. They experience shortness of breath and feel flushed and dizzy. Some panic attack sufferers feel as though they think that they are dying during an attack. People who suffer from a sudden onset of panic attacks all ask the same question - what causes panic attacks? The truth is that nobody really knows what causes...

Panic Attacks? Or Am I Going Out Of My Mind?!

Author:
Alexandra Mannock

If you think you might be experiencing panic attacks but are not sure what the heck it is that you're going through, you'll know for sure once you've read this article! If you know someone who has panic attacks, then you will love this article, because it will aid you in understanding precisely what this person is going through!

Ladies and gentlemen, this is what a panic attack feels like:

- Just before a panic attack, one starts to feel light-headed, overheated, and sweaty.

- Within a few seconds, paranoia sets in, and somehow...you feel as though everyone in the room is watching you even when they are not.

- You feel a very strong need to gulp a whole lot...for whatever reason...and your mouth is totally dry...you continue to frantically swallow air while you are getting increasingly more anxious.

- You feel helpless and insanely panicky...as if you are coming out of your own skin.

- You feel paralyzed by fear...frozen...almost unable to speak. You can't get yourself to leave your seat or wherever you are situated, because you are too afraid.

- The time (even though only a few minutes have passed) feels like a thousand years...the minutes seem like hours.

- Sweat literally drips down underneath your arm pits, and your hands are soaked with sweat.

- Feels like you are going to have a seizure or go into some sort of convulsions...and if anyone talks to you DURING the attack, you think to yourself, "Are you out of your mind? Don't you see that I'm having an anxiety attack???!!!!" (but that person just keeps right on talking, because they truly don't realize you're having the attack).

- And then you get even more paranoid, because you think that this person who's trying to talk to you, is actually noticing your panic attack and judging you. Again, they usually don't notice at all.

- You get more and more faint...and you wonder if you're going to pass out...you wish to God you could run out a door...run away from your seat...but you can't...because you're too damn frozen from fear.

- While you're still swallowing air, trying to avoid having some sort of convulsion, and dripping sweat...the room seems to be narrowing into a small line. Noise gets muffled...people's voices become nothingness...and you feel out of your own body.

- Your hands (and sometimes your head) shake...or at least...it seems that they're shaking (After I've had a panic attack, people have told me that they didn't notice any shaking at all).

- You finally break free...somehow you unglued yourself from that seemingly impossible "frozen fear" state you were in...and you run to the bathroom to splash cold water on your face, under your arm pits, down your shirt, etc... etc... anything to stop this horrible feeling.

- You catch your breath too. And, of course, wherever you were having the panic attack, you feel utterly anxious about going back to that very place, because you feel traumatized about having had the panic attack at that very place.

That, my friends, is what a panic attack feels like!

How To Control Your Panic Attacks
Controlling your panic attacks can seem like an impossible task when you are having them regularly. It can be difficult to pinpoint why they are occurring and what bring them on. Some people are lucky enough to know what they need to avoid or deal with, but most of the time panic comes without true "reason". One way many people choose to control their panic attacks is through medication. Your doctor can work with you to choose a medication for your specific type of panic. The difficult part will be finding a dosage and type that works best for you. Many people must try three or more medications until they find one that really helps without the bothersome side effects. The side effects of anxiety medication can be quite difficult to deal with. However, once you find a good one for you, medication can do wonders for your level of anxiety. In addition to taking meds for your panic attacks, you might want to find the route of your anxiety. Some people have had things in the past happen to them that might have created a sense of panic in them. Even something as simple as your parents divorcing can cause anxiety in you later in life. So, seeing a therapist to try to talk through some underlying issues is also a great idea for you to try. Remember, avoiding the situations that give you panic is fine, unless doing so seems to disrupt a normal routine and lifestyle. For instance, if you are terrified of sky diving and it gives you panic then absolutely avoid it! However, if you are afraid of going to the grocery, you might want to seek help.
