Does Therapy Work For Panic Attacks? |
|
Although there is more and more proof surfacing that panic attacks are a chemical reaction of the brain, many experts are not convinced that it is only a physical problem. Most psychologists think that while a person who suffers from panic attacks might be experiencing a chemical imbalance, they are also likely having emotional issues as well. Therefore, medication alone might not be treating their panic, but only masking the problem. Therapy is one thing many doctors recommend in addition to medication. The patients that would rather not take medication also find it helpful. The trick to making therapy work for your panic attacks is to choose the right therapist. You should "interview" a... |

Should You Confide in Your Friends About Your Panic Attacks? |
|
Imagine sitting in the gymnasium at your childs school while youre having a full-blown panic attack. There are people all around you and if you get up to leave the gym everyone will be staring at you. Your heart is racing a million miles a minute. Your face and body are drenched in sweat from heat to toe like youve just run a marathon. What a nightmare! Unfortunately, I dont have to imagine this because I lived it. This happened to me in the spring of 2005 and was the worst panic attack Id ever experienced. I felt utterly humiliated as other parents that I knew sat beside me and wondered what the heck was wrong with me. To me the only thing I could do at that moment was lie,... |

Panic Attacks: A Brief History
Author:
Ree Klock
It has been over 10 years since I was originally diagnosed with anxiety disorder, and 10 years since my last panic attack. This was a time before there were television and magazine ads touting medications for whatever anxiety disorder one may be suffering from so after 2 years of frequent and varied doctors visits and 3 different misdiagnoses that included a host of medications, was I finally properly diagnosed with acute anxiety disorder, manifesting itself through panic attacks. I did not accept the diagnosis right away. Having never heard of such a thing, I chalked it up to having some rare, undetectable, incurable disease. On with my life, or what was left of it, by this point severely depressed and agoraphobic to the point that I could no longer work due to the frequency and severity of my attacks. Most of my time was spent cloistered in my apartment fantasizing and planning my long and most assuredly painful death, until one morning upon arising I could not move. It felt like every muscle, tendon and ligament in my body had contracted and would not release. This was it, the moment I had been waiting for, deaths door, and I was not crazy! My death would prove, as much, and I along with my rare, undetectable incurable disease would be recorded for history in medical journals across the world. Since you are reading this, it is obvious that that scenario was not to be my fate. It does give you an idea of how anxiety disorder can affect ones psyche. Given that I was not dying, I was forced to accept the diagnosis and face the situation head on. Several years later, armed with knowledge, action on my part, and the help of some special people, I was panic free. It was realized that I had been suffering from anxiety disorder since childhood, undetected and ignored. I was to learn that many of my behaviors during those years encouraged and aided in the progression and severity of my condition. During the early phase of my recovery, I became interested in massage therapy as a tool to aid in stress and anxiety reduction. So fascinated with it, I became a certified massage therapist, and practiced for some years. In that time I provided over a thousand massages and learned that many people suffer from some kind of anxiety, and most do not recognize it as such, the ones that do medicate, medicate, medicate. It is a bad habit that this society has picked up, relying exclusively on the medical community for their health care needs. If you suffer from anxiety and or panic attacks or think you do this information is offered to you in the hopes that you will become interested in educating yourself, not so much about the condition, but what you can do about it. Dealing With Postpartum Depression Panic Attacks |
|
One out of every eight women suffers from postpartum depression, and many have panic attacks. Here are some things to try when you think you having a panic attack. Firstly try to distract yourself and remind yourself that your body is only tricking you. Wait before taking any actions, even if you feel like you should. You should feel the fear rise and fall, and when that happens you will better be able to identify and conquer it in the future. Rehearse your panic attacks so that you are more ready for them when they do come. Try identifying what you can do, rather than how you feel, and step outside yourself to give you better grounding. Remain in the present instead of allowing feelings from the past or fear of the future to control you. Dont be afraid of the fear. Exercise can be quite useful in long term coping, as it releases valuable endorphins and reduces muscle tension. Social contact associated with exercise is also quite healthy and gives a mother an additional support network she can rely on. It can also help improve a mothers self image, boosting her confidence and alleviating fear. Overall, remember that a panic attack by itself it not dangerous. It is simply a misplaced, biology induced feeling that it is possible to conquer. Rely on the people you love and trust, and but do not self medicate. Self medicating can also pass drugs along to your baby through breast milk so it is best avoided. Check Out More Articles: What Is The Medical History Of Postpartum Depression , new parent advice4 ,
